A little over twenty years ago, the ambitious PC strategy title Republic: The Revolution (Eidos) was released to mixed reviews. Developed by Elixir Studios over several years – led by Demis Hassabis, now CEO of Google DeepMind – the game was featured on the cover of Edge magazine in 1999, and heavily hyped ahead of release. Its music score received a BAFTA nomination in 2004, and the game featured an innovative, proprietary approach to interactive scoring that was ahead of its time – anticipating systems that would only become more widely adopted years later. Listen to the game’s soundtrack on Spotify, and see the music system in action below (via YouTube). Music by James Hannigan, recorded with the Slovak Symphony Orchestra and Soprano, Miranda Keys.
